SÉMINAIRE PHILOSOPHIQUE - EDGAR MORIN

Come and take part in a day dedicated to philosophy: at the media centre and the town hall.

Organised by the Noé discussion group and led by Marine Robert, Francis Tolmer and Christian Belbeze

As we do every year, we invite you to join us for a day devoted to philosophy.

This year, our seminar will focus on Edgar Morin and complex thought.

Edgar Morin, who passed away last May at the age of 104, was a member of the Resistance, a sociologist, a philosopher and a tireless observer of his time. A single question runs through his entire body of work: how can we conceive of a world in which phenomena are interconnected and where problems cannot always be understood by breaking them down into separate parts?

Rather than simplifying reality by reducing it, Morin invites us to distinguish between things whilst connecting them, and to take into account interactions, contradictions and uncertainty. This approach is particularly relevant in the face of the political, ecological, social and scientific challenges we are currently facing.

It is this way of thinking that we invite you to discover and, above all, to explore together during this day.

No prior knowledge of philosophy is required to take part.
Nor is it necessary to have read Edgar Morin or to be familiar with complex thought. The introductions, workshops and discussions are specifically designed to enable everyone to engage with the issues through real-life situations.

Are wolves the saviours of Yellowstone National Park?
Drawing on this now-famous story, we will explore what happens when a seemingly minor change triggers a cascade of consequences throughout an entire ecosystem.

At Noé Town Hall — 12.30 pm to 5.30 pm
12.30 pm — Philosophical aperitif: ‘The flavour of connection — Morin at the aperitif’

Can we understand a cocktail simply by identifying its ingredients? A workshop-style game to explore, glass in hand, what happens when the elements combine and interact.
1.00 pm — Lunch provided by Noé Town Hall
Lunch will be a relaxed opportunity for conversation and socialising.
2.00 pm — Philosophical workshop: ‘Thinking in complex ways’
Led by Marine Robert
5.00 pm — Debriefing of the day
